Climate action is often most powerful when it moves beyond awareness and becomes part of everyday work.

That is exactly what happened for Denis Otieno, Founder and CEO of ODI Agency Hub, a youth-led nonprofit organisation in Kenya supporting vulnerable communities through education, empowerment and climate action.

Our connection with Denis began through Sylvie Reid, who attended one of our Carbon Literacy courses on Carbon Literacy Action Day. As part of the day, we invited attendees to nominate someone to join a future course for free. Sylvie chose Denis.

During the course, Denis shared the mission behind ODI Agency Hub and the work his team were doing to support communities in Kenya. It was clear that their work aligned closely with the kind of practical, people-focused climate action we believe in at Sustainability Suite.

ODI Agency Hub wanted to better understand how sustainability could be embedded into its programmes and communities. Its reusable menstrual kits initiative already supported this goal, offering a practical response to period poverty while encouraging reusable, environmentally friendly alternatives.

Since completing Carbon Literacy training, Denis has taken that knowledge back into his organisation.

“Through Carbon Literacy training, mentorships, and fundraising support, we have built stronger awareness and practical action around sustainability. I also trained my team on Carbon Literacy, enabling them to apply sustainable practices in our daily activities and community programs.”

That is where the real impact begins. Carbon Literacy did not stop with one person attending a course. It was shared with the wider team and turned into practical action.

ODI Agency Hub has since introduced environmental cleaning activities within communities, increased climate awareness campaigns, encouraged responsible waste management, and continued promoting reusable products such as menstrual kits.

The Sustainability Suite community also wanted to support the work directly. On 5 May 2026, we held a beach clean fundraiser at Lytham St Annes, asking our community to sponsor us in support of Freedom for Girls and its Kenya project tackling period poverty.

Together, we raised just under £400.

For us, this story shows what can happen when education, community and collaboration come together. One Carbon Literacy attendee opened the door for someone else. Denis used that opportunity to strengthen sustainability within his organisation. Our wider community then helped support a project creating both social and environmental impact.

It is a reminder that climate action does not have to start with a huge strategy. It can start with one course, one introduction, one community project, or one decision to do things differently.

As Denis says:

“To anyone considering sustainability initiatives, I would encourage them to start small, remain consistent, and involve their communities. Small actions can create meaningful and lasting change.”

At Sustainability Suite, this is the kind of action we want to help more organisations take: practical, collaborative and rooted in real outcomes for people and planet.
